Hello, my name is Mary Jo Little Elk-Higgins and I come from an amazing family of tribal members. My late, great grandpa and grandma, Darwin Hayes and Lilly Elk River-Hayes, grandma Mary Etta Hayes-Little Elk and grandpa George Little Elk, my late mother Ruth Little Elk-Higgins and our Mothers Irene Hayes and Margaret Ann Hayes-Howlingwolf, who are still with us today.
Our dear grandpa Darwin Hayes and great uncle Shoeboy, 2 of 4 natives, sold their land in 1903 and it took an act of Congress to allow them to do this. Thanks to this act, Clinton was established and named a township. When this story was published in the Clinton 100 Centennial paper, it caused many other native families to also sell their land. The natives are an integral part of Clinton, and we come from this land.
When electing a representative for yourself, your family and your tribe, it is important that you elect someone who understands your community, the history, the accomplishments, the issues and the in which direction you want to head.
